Cagliari ospita la quindicesima edizione del Karel Music Expo:

anteprima il 3 settembre a Villa Siotto a Sarroch con Samuel e un appuntamento conclusivo il 12 settembre a cura di I Love Sardegna. 

Tra i protagonisti del festival artisti nazionali e internazionali come Daniele Celona, Giorgio Canali, Emel e Rodrigo D’Erasmo, Maria Basel, Edda, Cristina Donà, Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti 

Edizione numero quindici per il Karel Music Expo, festival delle culture resistenti ideato e organizzato dalla cooperativa Vox Day. Facendo fede al suo nome il festival “resiste” e dopo lo stop forzato durante l'annus horribilis della pandemia inizia a riprendere in mano quella trama di percorsi culturali variegati e complementari che ne ha caratterizzato le precedenti edizioni. 

Tutti gli appuntamenti di svolgeranno nella cornice del Lazzaretto di Cagliari, alternando la Sala Polifunzionale alla corte. A Villa Siotto a Sarroch, invece, si svolgerà l’evento di anteprima in programma venerdì 3 settembre. 

Il Karel Music Expo è un format multidisciplinare che promuove tutte le forme espressive estranee ai meccanismi della grande distribuzione; una vetrina di livello europeo che quest’anno ospita venti appuntamenti tra concerti, presentazioni editoriali, momenti di incontro, spaziando tra generi e stili “resistenti” della scena nazionale.

“Cinema tour”

Tappa sarda per il “Cinema Tour” del cantante torinese, che segue l’uscita di “Cinema”, il suo ultimo singolo in collaborazione con Francesca Michielin. Il brano, scritto e composto da Samuel, Colapesce e Federico Nardelli, arriva dopo “Brigatabianca”, il secondo album solista, pubblicato a gennaio.

Come nasce l'idea di creare un festival? Come funziona l'organizzazione e la progettazione? Quali sono le difficoltà e le sfide? E qual è il senso di operare in Sardegna. Partendo da questi spunti Laura Fortuna, regista e attrice della Fondazione Giuseppe Siotto, intervista Mattea Lissia, Manuela Fiori e Rita Atzeri; tre donne fondatrici dei festival culturali più importanti che da anni operano nel panorama  sardo. A partire dalle esperienze di ognuna e ripercorrendo la storia dei festival teatrali e letterari, si cercherà di tracciare quel filo sottile che unisce gli intenti di artiste diverse per creare sinergie culturali a livello locale e internazionale e imprimere un impatto sociale sul nostro territorio.

Presentazione libro “Nessun destino è segnato - Le storie di casa Emmaus”

Laureato in Lingue per la mediazione linguistica a Cagliari, ha all’attivo una serie di pubblicazioni relative a questo ambito di studi. Collabora dal 2015 con le pagine di cultura e spettacoli dell’Unione Sarda e da dieci anni scrive su Blow Up, dedicandosi alle recensioni di libri e film. Negli anni ha curato la comunicazione di festival letterari, come Leggendo Metropolitano, e di cinema, come Across Asia Film Festival. Ha inoltre scritto per siti come minima&moralia, Le parole e le cose, Il Tascabile, Nazione Indiana, La poesia e lo spirito, AgoraVox Italia. Da un periodo di collaborazione con Casa Emmaus, comunità di recupero situata alle porte di Iglesias, è nato “Nessun destino è segnato. Le storie di Casa Emmaus” (Alfa Editrice, 2021), il suo primo libro.

ANDREA ANDRILLO

Nel novembre del 2020 esce "Pròlagus, canzoni per resistere, per non morire" un libro-disco edito da S'Ardmusic e Abbà Editore. Il libro nasce attorno a spunti e suggestioni provenienti dal disco cui fa da corollario, un disco intimista, sentito e pieno di colori; undici canzoni di cui due totalmente in spagnolo e le altre in sardo, eccezion fatta per piccole, significative, simboliche contaminazioni della lingua inglese nei testi.

DANIELE CELONA

Daniele Celona è un autore alternativo. I brani che compone sono rappresentazioni e non solo canzoni. Il sound che costruisce è raffinato e modellato sapientemente. Il suo approccio testuale non scade mai nella banalità, attraverso un originale uso delle allitterazioni e di eleganti figure ritmiche. La sua forma canzone è, anche nei suoi episodi più accessibili, sempre alternativa ad approcci cantautorali più banali e semplicistici.

GIORGIO CANALI

Il 4 dicembre 2020 esce in doppio vinile e CD “Venti”, il nuovo disco di Giorgio Canali & Rossofuoco. A distanza di due anni dal precedente, Canali rilascia un doppio album, l’ottavo insieme ai Rossofuoco. Un lavoro composto da venti brani inediti, canzoni frutto della poetica intimista ma schietta, visionaria ma realista dell’artista sostenuta appieno dalla forza musicale dei Rossofuoco.

EMEL feat. RODRIGO D’ERASMO

La cantautrice tunisina ha tenuto concerti in Egitto e Iraq, si è esibita in Canada al Vancouver Folk Music Festival e al Festival du Monde Arabe de Montréal. All’inizio di luglio 2012, ha tenuto un concerto rivoluzionario a Baghdad , in Iraq. Nel 2013, dopo il suo primo concerto al Cairo dalla rivoluzione, Ahram Online l’ha definita “La Fairuz della sua generazione”. Ha debuttato per Dead Can Dance al festival Les nuits de Fourvière a Lione e si è esibita al WOMAD Festival a Charlton Park nel Regno Unito. Le autorità israeliane si sono rifiutate di farla entrare a Ramallah per esibirsi, quindi ha cantato davanti a una telecamera in Giordania. Il piccolo spettacolo è stato trasmesso al pubblico palestinese in un teatro a Ramallah. Nel 2017 si è esibita in Tunisia per il suo primo concerto in cinque anni nel prestigioso Festival di Cartagine. Quell’estate si esibì anche al Beitaddine Festival in Libano e al SummerStage festival a Central Park, New York City.

La collaborazione con Rodrigo D’Erasmo (Afterhours) rappresenta un’evoluzione del sound primigenio, per definire un nuovo concetto di world music.

MICHELE VACCARI incontra Simone Cavagnino

Presentazione libro “Urla sempre, primavera”

Genovese, nato nel 1980, si occupa di editoria, cinema e comunicazione. Ha coordinato la scrittura del film e del documentario per il progetto Making(of)Love, in uscita per Sky ad aprile 2021. Ha pubblicato “Italian Fiction”, “Giovani nazisti e disoccupati” (Castelvecchi 2010), “L’onnipotente” (Laurana 2011), “Il tuo nemico” (Frassinelli 2017) e “Un marito” (Rizzoli 2018).

IGOR LAMPIS

Chitarrista e membro fondatore dei Punkillonis, dal 2012 ha intrapreso parallelamente la carriera solista, come necessità rivolta soprattutto ad accompagnare con musica e canto la sua attività di autore di romanzi, racconti e poesie durante i reading di presentazione. Da quel momento in poi non ha smesso di imbracciare la chitarra acustica vestendo anche i panni di cantautore e traendo spunto dai grandi nomi del passato che ha sempre apprezzato. Nel 2021 esce “Punk-Autoriale. Dal punk alla canzone d'autore in una sola mossa” (Cenacolo di Ares).

Progetto solista di matrice drone/ambient in cui convivono elementi di natura doom, postrock e noise del sardo Valerio Marras. Concertisticamente molto attivo ha suonato in tutta Europa esibendosi in clubs, festivals, chiese e accademie con continuità. Con quattro dischi all’attivo dal 2017 a oggi usciti per Subsound Records, Midira Records e Talk About Records presenterà al KME “Albero”, uscito

a maggio per Subsound in solo vinile.

A distanza di due anni dal precedente disco “Graziosa utopia”, a febbraio 2019 è uscito per Woodworm Label “Fru Fru”, il quinto album solista di Edda, al secolo Stefano Rampoldi, ex Ritmo Tribale, astronauta del rock alternativo italiano.

Un disco inconsueto, inaspettato e maturo, diverso dai precedenti.

CRISTINA DONÀ

Una delle cantautrici più stimate del panorama musicale italiano, punto di riferimento e figura ispiratrice per le nuove generazioni di musicisti, torna con un tour che anticipa l’uscita del nuovo disco “deSidera”, portando con sé la ricchezza dei suoi ventiquattro anni di carriera. Il nuovo album, che arriva a sette anni di distanza dall’ultima pubblicazione discografica, è frutto di un lavoro meditato e accorto, un disco identitario che si spinge in profondità e scuote.

Stziopa, alias Stefano Manconi, è un musicista e produttore di musica elettronica originario di Sant’Antioco. La sua ricerca musicale trascende le distinzioni di ambient, techno e house attraverso un approccio minimalista, caratterizzato da pochi elementi e teso a esaltare la coesistenza tra questi in un continuum spazio-temporale. Gli elementi stilistici dei brani, costruiti sull'improvvisazione e prodotti principalmente tramite sintetizzatori modulari, spaziano da melodie “fluttuanti” a beat “storti-finchè-dritti”, attraverso pattern ripetitivi e in lenta evoluzione.

Conferenza “Gli Innumerevoli Santi”

La cappella dei Martiri del Duomo di Cagliari ospita 179 nicchie contenenti le sacre relique di altrettanti santi. Tutto cominciò il 07 Novembre 1614, inizio dei lavori di scavo voluti dall'Arcivescovo Desquivel all'interno della Basilica di San Saturnino, per ricercare, sulla scia dei ritrovamenti di PortoTorres, corpi di santi e martiri, fu caratterizzato dalla scoperta di un frammento epigrafico marmoreo le cui poche lettere residue furono lette come abbreviazione della formula "Sancti innumerabilis" ed interpretate con entusiasmo quale prova e incentivo ad ulteriori ricerche.

Il nuovo album uscito nel 2021 si intitola “Origini” ed è un disco volutamente scarno e intenso, dai contenuti diretti e spirituali eseguito voce e chitarra, cantato e suonato in presa diretta, come si faceva una volta mantenendo la dimensione artigianale, quasi campestre, straricco di imperfezioni incastonate tra loro a fare le canzoni lasciandole intatte nella loro origine.

PASQUALE DEMIS POSADINU / OK BA

Un duo formatosi a Sassari nell'autunno 2018 da Pasquale Demis Posadinu e Alberto Atzori. Il nome deriva dalla domanda che solitamente la figlia di Pasquale fa per ottenere qualcosa che in teoria non le sarebbe concesso "Mangio altre due caramelle, ok ba'?" A luglio 2020 raggiungono Riccardo Onori e Christian Rigano (Jovanotti, Elisa) in uno studio in Friuli dove lavorano arrangiando e producendo quattro nuovi brani scritti precedentemente da Alberto e Pasquale. Ad aprile 2021 i brani vengono passati ai mix dal produttore Pino “Pinaxa” Pischetola che completa il lavoro. Fertilia è il primo singolo nato da questa importante collaborazione.

MARIA BASEL

Armonie malinconiche, loop vibranti e arrangiamenti sofisticati costituiscono il suono di Maria Basel, cantante, compositrice, produttrice e DJ ucraina residente in Germania. Il suo progetto solista riunisce i punti di forza della sua formazione come musicista classica che predilige l’elettronica, il jazz e l'RnB, arricchiti da un’espressione vocale delicata ed evocativa che armonizza gli stili musicali stratificati e crea atmosfere suggestive. Al KME 2021 presenta il suo EP di debutto "Layers".

Con oltre venticinque anni di musica, indipendenza e avventure, più di millecinquecento concerti, dischi, fumetti, maschere, disegni, sogni e un’etichetta (La Tempesta) che ha dato voce a tantissimi nuovi artisti, ora sono pronti a riportare la gioia delle loro performance live, con nuovi travestimenti e canzoni provenienti dal loro vastissimo repertorio che spazia dal rock al reggae, senza soluzione di continuità.

Pianista di fama internazionale si è esibito, più di una volta, in festival prestigiosi quali il Lucerne Piano Festival, il Bodensee Festival, il Barossa Music Festival, il Festival d’Auvers, il Time in Jazz Festival di Berchidda, il Mozart Festival di Würzburg, il North Sea Jazz Festival, l’Expo 02 a Morat in Svizzera con Paolo Fresu e Alpentöne Festival con la sua composizione di 75 minuti, “Songlines”. Fra le sue numerose registrazioni il Cd con lavori di John Adams, Maurice Ravel e Erik Satie è stato insignito del più importante premio australiano, l’ABC Classic FM, come migliore disco classico del 1997. Due collaborazioni importanti sono stati il suo adattamento del Fauré Requiem per Chorprojekt San Gallo e quintetto jazz, e i suoi intermezzi jazz basati su Ravel per 2 pianoforti (con Kenny Drew Jr.). Una collaborazione recente in Sardegna è nel progetto "377: in transito" di Sebastiano Dessanay, insieme a lui e Roberto Migoni.

Mostra di La Chigi - In collaborazione con Galleria Siotto

La Chigi vive e lavora a Trento. Divoratrice compulsiva di arte e letteratura dallo spirito vintage, lavora con materiali non convenzionali, differenti medium e “objets trouvès” sul linguaggio e sui suoi limiti e sul tema della Casa. Attraverso installazioni e ready made materializza i sentimenti in piccole scenette ironiche e apparentemente leggere. 

I mini-mondi raccontati nella mostra sono un modo per pensare fuori dagli schemi nei confini di una scatola: "arredata" da ciascuno a modo suo, la scatola/Casa diviene meno stretta e convenzionale di quanto si potrebbe presumere.

Before telling other people some ways on how to improve themselves, let them see that you yourself is a representation and a product of self improvement. Self improvement makes us better people, we then inspire other people, and then the rest of the world will follow.

Stop thinking of yourselves as second-rate beings. Forget the repetitive thought of “If only I was richer… if only I was thinner” and so on. Accepting your true self is the first step to self improvement. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others only to find out at the end that we’ve got 10 more reasons to envy them.

Over the years, I’ve had as many rejections as anyone else, especially as an author who doesn’t have a “celebrity” name. Below there are some ways I’ve learned to cope with this situation.

Don’t let a “no” undermine your confidence, your belief in the value of your product, idea, book, or your ability. Go out and resell it again!

No matter what you sell, you will inevitably face rejections and refusals, but learning to see “No” as valuable feedback can take your sales to a new level. Regardless of how often we hear “no” it’s a tough thing to take.

1. It’s only their opinion – When someone tells us that what we’re attempting can’t be done, we tend to think they’re right. What I’ve learned is to look at that “no” as just that person’s opinion. It isn’t good or bad; it’s just data coming in to me. I can analyze it and make my next move smarter. What I’ve received is valuable feedback that can help me to find a new and different approach.

2. Don’t get defensive – It’s OK to get angry when rejected, what’s not OK is to make excuses or try to persuade the other party that they are wrong. Use your anger to get yourself going again, let that “no” create a sense of urgency to find a better way.

Take action to prove that the other person is wrong. Instead of getting depressed when rejected, take up the challenge, and vow to solve the problem and demonstrate that you were in the right all along.

3. Let history be your guide – If people are laughing at your ideas, ask yourself why that might be. Is your idea just ahead of its time? Or is it because you haven’t expressed your concept well enough, or demonstrated to prospects how they’re going to benefit in the long term?

Understand that it takes time for every new idea, product to gain acceptance. When Alexander Graham Bell said he had found a way for people living thousands of miles apart to communicate, other people scoffed and said it couldn’t be done.

This free editorial space essentially doubles the amount of space you get for a given amount of money. This editorial space is devoted to an article about the company or individual or product, and it has the added cachet of seeming to be work of an outside source. The editorial company be written by the publication staff, or the advertiser may provide the copy.

Press releases can be another excellent source of free space. A well-written press release on an interesting subject will attract the editor's interest. The editor may even follow up with a phone call for more details. The result can be anything from a paragraph to a feature article. All this comes for the price of mailing the release. Keep in mind that you want to target the publication that write about the kinds of things you are doing.

Many telephone call-in shows will take calls from entrepreneurs with interesting products or stories. DTC Publishing Company, P.O. Box 1606-MM, Ozark, AL 36360 has a list of 500 stations around the country that you can contact to work out possibilities for free air time.

First of all, you have to get people to follow you. How is this accomplished?

People follow others when they see a clear sense of purpose. People will only follow you if they see that you know where you are going. Remember that bumper sticker? The one that says, don't follow me, I'm lost too? The same holds true for leadership. If you yourself do not know where you're headed to, chances are people will not follow you at all.

You yourself must know the vision of the organization. Having a clear sense of hierarchy, knowing who the bosses are, who to talk to, the organization's goals and objectives, and how the organization works is the only way to show others you know what you are doing.

Being a leader is not about what you make others do. It's about who you are, what you know, and what you do. You are a reflection of what you're subordinates must be.

Studies have shown that one other bases of good leadership is the trust and confidence your subordinates have of you. If they trust you they will go through hell and high water for you and for the organization.

Trust and confidence is built on good relationships, trustworthiness, and high ethics.

The way you deal with your people, and the relationships you build will lay the foundation for the strength of your group. The stronger your relationship, the stronger their trust and confidence is in your capabilities.

Once you have their trust and confidence, you may now proceed to communicate the goals and objectives you are to undertake.

Communication is a very important key to good leadership. Without this you can not be a good leader. The knowledge and technical expertise you have must be clearly imparted to other people.

Also, you can not be a good leader and unless you have good judgment. You must be able to assess situations, weigh the pros and cons of any decision, and actively seek out a solution.

It is this judgment that your subordinates will come to rely upon. Therefore, good decision-making is vital to the success of your organization.

Leaders are not do-it-all heroes. You should not claim to know everything, and you should not rely upon your skills alone.

You should recognize and take advantage of the skills and talents your subordinates have. Only when you come to this realization will you be able to work as one cohesive unit.

Divide the time period into blocks of achievement that are reachable. Work consistently toward accomplishing each day, each week, each month what you set out to do. Goal-setting is a must in every area of life. Little is ever accomplished without definite goals.

** BE A LIST MAKER. Each evening list all the things you want to get done the following day. That gives you an organized approach to each day. As each task is finished, mark it off your list. It is amazing how much gets done when one works with a "things-to-do" list.

** BE ENTHUSIASTIC. Enthusiasm is the high-octane "fuel" that salespeople run on.

** RECOGNIZE THAT THE MAGIC WORD IN SALES IS "ASK." In direct sales we don't have to wait for business to come to us. We create our own business by asking for it. Ask for appointments, then you can do business. Ask for business, then you will close sales. Ask for referrals, then you always have a full list of potential clients. Be quietly, yet firmly aggressive.

** EXPECT NO'S. Realize that no's are not personal. In sales, as perhaps nowhere else, the law of averages works. Every no gets you closer to a yes. Keep track of your ratio.

** BE POSITIVE IN YOUR ATTITUDE. Success in sales, as in all areas of life is 90 percent attitude and 10 percent aptitude. All of us must work at developing habits of constructive thinking. I am proud to be a salesperson.

The question is: how do I get a positive attitude to attract more joy?
You do not have much to lose by adopting a healthy, positive attitude. Studies show that such an attitude actually retards aging, makes you healthier, helps you develop a better stress coping mechanism, and has a very positive effect on all the people you meet every day.

I am going to ask you to something very weird right now. First of all, I want you to listen to your thoughts. Now tell me, what thoughts fill your head? Would you label them as positive, or negative?

Now let's say you are walking down the street with these thoughts. Do you think anyone who would meet you would be able to tell you what’s on your mind?

The type of attitude you carry depends on you. It can be either positive or negative.

Positive thoughts have a filling effect. They are admittedly invigorating. Plus, the people around the person carrying positive thoughts are usually energized by this type of attitude.

Negative thoughts on the other hand have a sapping effect on other people. Aside from making you look gloomy and sad, negative thoughts can turn a festive gathering into a funeral wake.

A positive attitude attracts people, while a negative attitude repels them. People tend to shy away from those who carry a negative attitude.

We can also define attitude as the way of looking at the world. If you choose to focus on the negative things in the world, more or less you have a negative attitude brewing up. However, if you choose to focus on the positive things, you are more likely carry a positive attitude.

You have much to gain from a very positive attitude. For one, studies have shown that a positive attitude promotes better health. Those with this kind of attitude also have more friends. projecting a positive attitude also helps one to handle stress and problems better than those who have a negative attitude.

A positive attitude begins with a healthy self-image. If you will love the way you are and are satisfied, confident, and self-assured, you also make others are around feel the same way.

A negative attitude, on the other hand, has, of course, an opposite effect. So, carrying a negative attitude has a twofold drawback. You feel bad about yourself, and you make others feel the same way.

If you want to have a positive attitude, you have to feature healthy thoughts. This is probably very hard to do nowadays since, all around us, the media feeds us nothing but negative thoughts. A study shows that for every 14 things a parent says to his or her child, only one is positive. This is truly a saddening thought.

If you want a healthier outlook in life, you need to think happy thoughts, and you have to hear positive things as well. So, what can you do? Well, for starters, you could see a funny movie, you could play with children, spend some time telling jokes with friends. All these activities fill you with positive stimuli, which in turn promotes positive attitude.

Although it is impossible to keep ourselves from the negative things around us, you can still carry a positive attitude by focusing on the good things, the positive things in life.

And this positive attitude you now carry can be of benefit to other people. Sometimes when other people feel down, the thing people mostly do is try to give them advice. But sometimes, all they need is somebody to sit by them, and listen to them. If you have a positive attitude you may be able to cheer them up without even having to say anything.

If positive attitude is really great, why do people choose to adopt a negative attitude instead? One who carries a negative attitude may be actually sending a signal for attention. Before you get me wrong, feeling sad, angry, or gloomy is not wrong itself. But dwelling on these thoughts for far too long is not healthy either. There is a time to mourn.

As always, if you are beset by troubles, even in your darkest hour, focus on the good things in life, you will always have hope. Problems become something you can overcome.

How Can I Become a Salesperson? ... The techniques for achieving your most desired outcomes are at your fingertips, when you remember that life is a series of presentations.

As I said in my last column, like it or not we are all salesmen. Our lives are made up of a series of “sales presentations”, otherwise known as presenting ourself in the best light possible.

Whether we’re out for a job interview, trying for a raise, or just convincing our employees that a job must be accomplished – you are making a presentation.

To become masterful at it can be summed up in the acronym IPRESENT! In my last column we covered the steps “I” through “E”:

** I – involve your audience
** P – prepare your audience
** R – research your arsenal
** E – explain “Why?”

Let’s finish the acronym today.

“S” stands for State (mental) Management. The mental state of the successful presenter must be congruent with the message. If you don’t believe that, try giving a pep talk to your sales force when you’re depressed – it won’t work!

You must be aware of and manage your own mental state and that of your listeners or communication channels will not be open. I don’t have space to elaborate on methods of doing this, but here are a few key hints. First, “AAI” – act as if. Act the way you want to feel, it’s amazing how this works.

Use music to set the mood if necessary, dress the part, and reduce your anxiety by whatever method works for you. Remember that you’re the one in charge, and presentation mastery isn’t about being perfect – it’s about achieving your objective.

“E” is for eliminating the unknowns. Fear of public speaking ranks high on most people’s list of worst fears. You may find you’re unusually nervous, develop poor voice tone or negative body language, and be unable to respond to audience feedback.
Managing your anxiety permits you to focus on your audience and their needs. The basic approach to do this is the asking ourselves a list of “what if?” questions. Another way to overcome our fear is to take ownership of the situation. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. Double check your notes, and prepare yourself.

“N” is fudging a little by using the second letter of the word “know” – as in kNow Your Audience. Whether it is one person or many that you are presenting to you must do three basic things: Meet their needs, reduce tension, and avoid mistakes.

A good knowledge of the listeners will give you a chance to tailor your objectives to meet their needs. This also allows you to reduce the “audience-presenter” tension so they will focus on what you’re saying. With a clear knowledge of your audience’s views you’ll be sensitive to potential “hot buttons”.

“T” stands for “Tailor Your Presentation Throughout”. Boring listeners leads to missed objectives or total failure. You must be flexible and responsive to your audience. To do this you need to use techniques that will give you audience feedback; you must diagnose the cause of the problem you’re addressing, and finally you must choose the solution to act upon.

When you’re presenting watch for non-verbal behavior such as clock-watching, foot-tapping, and cat-napping. When any of these are present get some feedback with, “Is it too warm in here?” or “Should I pick up the pace?”

That breaks the attention or lack of, of the audience and brings them back to your talk. One important thing to remember is that the mind can absorb no more than the seat can endure. Sometimes a simple thing like taking a short stretch break will solve the problem.

How to Get My Articles Published? Finding your angle is often a matter of narrowing your topic. A topic like “Sports” is far too general, narrow it to say, “Table Tennis” is better. Often, reducing the story to a single dimension e.g., focus on a key person, place, or event – gives a salable angle.

1. Test Your Idea:

To lead to a sale, your query must convince the editor that you have a clear idea of what you plan to cover in the article, and what approach you ‘re going to take. So before writing the letter, think your article idea through carefully, and picture yourself describing the article to a friend.

2. Find Your Angle:

When your subject is popular, you must give the editor a fresh approach. One way is to take an idea like “Overcoming Failure” and give it a twist to something like “Failure Can Be Good for You.” It needn’t be exotic to sell, something as mundane as “New and Improved” has worked by adding a new ingredient to the usual.

3. Research Helps:

While many queries can be written entirely from your own knowledge, a little research can pay big dividends by seducing the editor. Facts sell editors on an idea. Editors look for queries with many specifics: Don’t just write that “Last year millions of people suffered from yeast infections.” Tell how many millions – and why!

Research both the topic and the markets you’re aiming it at. A common reason for rejection is because of inadequate knowledge of the magazine.

4. Shaping Your Raw Material:

After you have the basics:
a. the idea
b. the slant/facts, and
c. the market

then you’re ready to write your query.

A good query starts strong, and never lets up until the editor is sold. Follow the two newspaper dictums; The five W’s (who, what, where, when, why) which explains the story immediately, and “the inverted pyramid” which emphasized putting the most interesting information first.

You’ll lose the editor’s interest if you save the best for last, and always remember EDITOR’S CUT FROM THE BOTTOM UP!

5. 3 Main Sections to a Query:

a. The Lead Paragraph
b. The Summary
c. The Author’s Bio.

Each has a specific purpose: first, tell the editor what the story is, then why she/he should buy it, and finally who is going to write it.

The Lead – is aimed to hook the editor and make them want to continue reading.
Once you’ve aroused the editor’s attention, move directly to a summary of the article.

Summary - This section should convince the editor that you know where you want to go with the article; it should outline the points you plan to cover or provide factual information about your topic – giving only enough to prove that your story is real.

Here you can mention your sources. Tell the editor who’ll you’ll be talking to, and if experts are they on the cutting edge of today’s technology. Also include here a working title for the article. Don’t spend a lot of time trying to get a provocative headline, because titles are often changed by the editor before publication.

Author’s Bio – is where you sell yourself as a writer to the editor now that you’ve sold him/her on the idea. Don’t be bashful; editors expect a bit of sell in the bio.

There’s nothing wrong with saying, “I’m highly qualified to write this article because…” if a convincing reason follows. Start your bio with your publishing credits, and include magazines similar to the one you’re pitching if you can.
