Engineered Stone: das Product fur nachhaltiges Bauen mit Stein!

A.St.A. Europe, the European Association of Engineered Stone Producers, will present an event in Berlin on the theme of Engineered Stone: das Product fur nachhaltiges Bauen mit Stein!

On 31st March 2011, at 10:30 a.m., at Italia Palace, on the corner of Unter den Linden – Charlottestrasse, the exhibit of a wide range of construction and furnishing products will take place, presented by the Associate Companies.
Following the exposition, at 6:00 p.m., a technical seminar will be held to illustrate the properties of these products, followed by a round table on the theme of sustainable construction with Engineered Stones.
All of the most important companies in the sector have already adhered to the initiative. Remember that these companies, spread throughout nine countries in the Mediterranean area (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Romania, Israel and Turkey) market some 20 million square metres per year of products, representing over 95% of European production and almost 80% of the world production of Engineered Stones.Although they definitely represent a niche sector, Engineered Stones are extremely important.

There are two primary fields of application: construction and furnishing, where a typical example is for kitchen or bathroom counters. There are also technical reasons for the success of engineered stones. In fact, they have generally superior performance with respect to natural stone, both in terms of physical and mechanical resistance, and this permits the use of small thicknesses. This is a winning trait, because it implies the possibility to reduce weights, making movement and installation easier and less costly. Additionally, they can be designed and manufactured cut to size, according to the specifications of the final user. In this sense, the term “Engineered Stones” seems to be truly appropriate to define this material.

The continuous research to ensure the sustainability of these materials in the construction sector and their consequently minimal environmental impact makes them particularly modern. The aspect of environmental sustainability of the product also has obvious practical implications. One of the reasons the European Association was created was to introduce the producers on the level of the European Economic Community, with concrete and precise answers concerning their environmental compatibility, because in future, the CE marking, in addition to guaranteeing the requirements of safety already emanated, must provide information concerning the environmental compatibility and sustainability of these materials.
