Aurora takes full advantage of the latest high performance, power efficient Intel Xeon 5500 processors series.

The new generation processor is Intel's most revolutionary server processor since the introduction of the Intel Pentium® Pro processor 14 years ago. It can automatically adjust to specified energy usage levels, speed-up data center transactions and customer database queries thanks to new features such as Intel Turbo Boost which increases system performance based on the user's needs, and Integrated Power Gates that turn off unused cores to save electricity and reduce heat. In particular, Intel® Turbo Boost is a feature that allows the processor to operate at higher speeds if a workload needs it and as long the processor isn't operating above its power and thermal limits. This allows the CPU to dynamically deliver additional performance above the base frequency if needed.

The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series also takes intelligent power to a new level with up to 15 automated operating states. These create significant improvements in chip power management by adjusting system power consumption based on real-time throughput and without sacrificing performance.

In addition, the user-friendly software environment is fully compatible with most existing HPC codes and tools, and requires minimal or no porting for near optimal performance. Extra acceleration is available using the integrated programmable accelerator.

Eurotech introduces the Unified Network Architecture™ (UNA) in Aurora, which offers dramatic advantages over conventional HPC systems by radically improving performance and feature set. At the same time, the UNA reduces the number of physical and logical layers for exceptionally low memory to memory latency.

In each node, the UNA integrates a 60Gbps switchless 3D torus, a 40Gbps switched Infiniband® network, three multilevel synchronization networks and a programmable network processor. User-programmable logic transparently enables the optimal routing of data packets and manages the multilevel synchronization networks, for seamless scalability up to multiple PetaFLOPS.

Another exciting innovation is the Aurora direct liquid cooling system, which eliminates vibrations and rotating parts while providing precise control over component temperature. By removing the typical sources of failure in traditional HPC systems – even the on-node storage is solid-state – and thanks to the embedded redundant design, Aurora is exceptionally reliable.

Aurora is one of the greenest HPC systems on the market: its efficient design is both light on the energy bill, eliminating the additional costs of traditional cooling, and also makes it possible to squeeze as much number crunching as possible from every Watt. Rome: Summertime Jazz Festival, 1st – 31st July 2009

Summertime, a jazz festival that takes place every year in Rome, is one of the main events organised at the “Casa del Jazz” (jazz house).

The Casa del Jazz in Rome, which was inaugurated few years ago in Villa Osio, a property which had been confiscated from the boss of the Magliana gang Enrico Nicoletti, has soon become a landmark for jazz musicians and lovers. The Casa del Jazz, which arises in a beautiful park, includes various spaces which are all meant to promote the knowledge of jazz music and to host concerts and recording sessions. In the three buildings that make up the Casa del Jazz, indeed, there are a professional recording studio, a library that hosts audio-video material and Italian and international jazz magazines and books, an audiovisual archive where you can find the recordings of the concerts that have taken place in the Casa del Jazz, and last but not least an auditorium with approximately 150 seats that hosts live concerts, but also films projections, lectures on the history of jazz, listener’s guide for those who are not expert, press conferences, records and books presentations, workshops and master classes. The ideal place for all jazz lovers, who often plan their holidays in Rome just to immerse themselves in their favourite music.

Summer is certainly the best period to visit the Casa del Jazz: for some years the beautiful park of Villa Osio has hosted Summertime, an important jazz festival featuring the best Italian and international jazz musicians. Jazz music will be played throughout July, thanks to a series of concerts that have already convinced many jazz lovers to book hostels in Rome. The festival will kick off on the 1st of July with “The Unknown Rebel Band”, featuring piano player Giovanni Guidi, which tells stories of freedom, rebellion and justice through music, and will then go on with “Giovani leoni europei” (young European lions), a project realised with the help of some European institutions that will bring on the stage of the Casa del Jazz young Italian, Swedish, Dutch and German musicians. One of the aims of the festival, and more in general of the Casa del jazz, is supporting young talented musicians, besides hosting jazz icons. And famous jazz players will not miss in the festival: the audience of Villa Osio will enjoy the music played by important artists like Baptiste Trotignon, an excellent piano player that will play in a quintet made of some of the most interesting musicians of New York’s scene, Italian Enrico Pieranunzi, American trumpeter Dave Douglas, who will perform with the Brass Ecstasy, a homage to Lester Bowie and his Brass Fantasy, and many more.

Other events that you cannot miss include the performance of Leo Pantarei, an Italian percussionist participating in the Omparty project who plays a very original kind of music, the concert of the trio lead by piano player Marc Cary, which plays acoustic jazz mixing different music traditions (Afro-American, Indian, Western African and Native American’s), and the performance of the Sinenomine Ensemble, which is characterised by a thorough research on folk music, sounds and vocality.

The concert that Nine Inch Nails will hold in Rome on the 22nd of July is an unmissable event for all the fans of the band at least for three reasons.

Trent Reznor, founder and only fixed member of the band, announced that he is not going to release albums with the name Nine Inch Nails anymore. 20 years after the publication of the first album Pretty Hate Machine, this is the end of the story of one of the most important and influential bands of the last two decades, a band that has left an indelible trace in the world of music with albums like The Downward Spiral (1994) and The Fragile (1999). The story of the band, which is identified with singer, multistrumentist, producer, lyrics composer Trent Reznor, begins in the 80s in Cleveland, Ohio, where Reznor begins to play with drum player Chris Vrenna. Soon Reznor realises that no musicians can play his songs as he wants them to do, therefore he decides to play personally all the instrumental parts except drums. This composing technique becomes his main feature, and Reznor hires other musicians only when he needs to be accompanied during live performances. Pretty Hate Machine, released in 1989, is considered as one of the symbols of industrial rock, a genre that mixes rock and electronic, while the following album, The Downward Spiral, published in 2004, is one of the best-selling industrial albums ever. In 1999 Treznor publishes The Fragile, which is followed by a quite long break that ends in 2005 with the publication of With Teeth. Since then Nine Inch Nails have never stopped: Year Zero was born in 2007, and in the same year Reznor announces that he is free from any record deals. The new phase for Nine Inch Nails begins in 2008 with Ghosts I-IV, the first experiment of the band with digital retailing, which is followed after a very short time by The Slip (which can be downloaded for free from the band’s website), the last chapter of the twenty-year career of Nine Inch Nails. Rome: Bruce Springsteen Concert, 19 July 2009

At the threshold of 60 years and more than 30 years after the beginning of his career Bruce Springsteen is still one of the most beloved rockers in the world, and his live performances are unmissable and long-awaited events for thousands of fans.

Only a few months after the publication of his latest album, Working on a Dream, and after his American tour, Bruce Springsteen is ready to arrive in Europe for a series of concerts in many cities: the tour will kick off in Landgraaf in Holland on the 30th of May and will end in Santiago, Spain, on the 2nd of August. Springsteen will play in Italy as well; three dates have been scheduled: 19th of July at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, 21st July at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin, and 23rd of July at the Stadio Friuli in Udine. This will certainly be an intense summer for Springsteen’s Italian fans, who always welcome the boss in a very warm way, and who have already bought tickets and booked luxury hotels in Rome not to miss the event. Rome: Buena Vista Social Club Concert, 11 July 2009

Summer in Rome is particularly appealing, due to various cultural and music events that the city regularly hosts attracting not only the tourists who choose the eternal city as a travel destination, above all in summer, but also the Roman citizens that stay in the city in summer, and for whom the wide range of events fit for all tastes and all ages is an interesting and pleasant vent after a day at work or trapped in the traffic jam.

“Luglio suona bene” (July sounds good), a festival organized by Fondazione Musica per Roma, is one of those important music and cultural events that make a stay in Rome in summer even more attractive. The 7th edition of the festival, that is traditionally hosted in the Auditorium Parco della Musica, will take place between the end of June and the end of July, hosting a number of artists coming from all over the world and playing different music genres. The Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra, which got very popular about 10 years ago, although its members are not young or inexpert musicians at all, achieved a great success both in music and cinema. In a decade musically dominated by English music and alluring boybands, the record Buena Vista Social Club and the homonymous documentary directed by great German director Wim Wenders achieved an amazing success, going beyond the best expectations and making the orchestra one of the most famous Cuban bands in the world.

Buena Vista Social Club was the name of an historic club in Havana, which in the 40s was the meeting place of black people (at that time clubs were divided according to races), who used to dance and play there. At the end of the 50s the club was closed, but after 40 years a group of important Cuban musicians gave birth to the Afro-Cuban All Stars, releasing the album Buena Vista Social Club in 1996 and contributing to the diffusion of the passion for Cuban music all over the world. The orchestra began to perform in various locations: a concert that they held in Amsterdam in 1999 and another performance at the Carnegie Hall in New York became the subject of Wim Wenders’ documentary, and this was only the beginning of a live activity that keeps taking the orchestra all over the world, in spite of the death of some members of the original line-up. Rome: The Blessed Angelico. The Dawn of the Renaissance, 8 April – 5 July 2009

Every summer tourists coming from all over Italy and from the rest of the world travel to Rome, the eternal city that thanks to its huge historic and artistic heritage catches the attention of millions of people of different age, culture and nationality.

Visiting Rome, its museums, historic buildings and monuments is always a unique experience, which can bring us back to the past. The tourists who travel to Rome are spoiled for choice, due to a great amount of churches, exhibitions and much more, and very often a short holiday is enough to see only a small part of what a city like Rome can offer. However, if you have already booked your low cost accommodation in Rome for this summer, you cannot miss the great exhibition dedicated to one of the most important Italian artists, the Blessed Angelico. From the 8th of April to the 5th of July Musei Capitolini will host the exhibition “The Blessed Angelico. The Dawn of the Renaissance”, which is considered as one of the most outstanding art events of 2009. This is the largest Italian exhibition ever dedicated to the Tuscan artist, who was dedicated another personal exhibition in the Vatican and in Florence in 1955 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death, while the exhibition that will be held this year in Rome is part of the celebrations for the 550th anniversary of the artist’s death. Fra’ Giovanni da Fiesole (this was his real name) was born in Vicchio, Florence (the same village where another great Italian artist, Giotto, was born) about the year 1395, and died in Rome in 1455, leaving an indelible trace in art history. The Blessed Angelico, indeed, is considered as one of the main figures of early Italian Renaissance, an artist that was influenced by late Middle Ages artists, yet he took a new route towards Renaissance art.

The exhibition is worth a visit for several reasons. First of all it includes an accurate selection of works coming from museums and collections from all over the world, which make visitors discover the different phases of the life and style of the Blessed Angelico, from the late gothic period to a more mature phase, characterized by a humanistic taste. The exhibition also includes some works which have never been displayed before, like the altar step from Zagabria (St Francis receiving the stigmata and the Martyrdom of St Peter) and the Annunciation from Dresden (reassembled in the 16th century), as well as other works that have been restored for the exhibition, like the Triptych from the Corsini Gallery in Rome including the Last Judgment, Ascension and Pentecost. Another feature that makes this exhibition particularly interesting is the focus on all the forms of art used by the Blessed Angelico, who was not only painter, but also miniaturist and drawer: space will be given to panels, tabernacles, canvas, polyptychs, altarpieces, but also to rare drawings, engraving and a mass-book containing miniatures.

The exhibition will be an unmissable event for all art lovers that will stay in a family hotel in Rome from the 8th of April to the 5th of July.

Vintage cars and motorbikes fascinate not only drivers, motorcyclists and motor lovers, for whom the roar of motors is really like music and the most ancient and rare models are like jewels of inestimable value: even for those who are not experts or passionate seeing a vintage car or motorbike is an interesting experience, which makes them go back in time admiring vehicles which are completely different from the ones that we use nowadays, and which might tell us something more about the life and the habits of our ancestors.

If you have the possibility to admire vintage vehicles not locked in a garage, but while they are running along a historic route, the experience turns out to be even more interesting, and its evocative power gets stronger: this is the case of the Monte Mario Motorcycling Circuit, an event which will take place in Rome on the 10th of May 2009 for the 6th consecutive year. Motorbikes of all brands built before the 31st of December 1979 can take part in this non-competitive race, which is very exciting also for the public: every year many people watch the race and spend a wonderful holiday in Rome at once.

The day begins early for motorcyclists, with the preliminary operations and the race entry, followed by the recognition lap and the beginning of the race, at 10 o’clock. A prize will be awarded to those who will make the best time, but some special prices will be awarded also to the youngest and the oldest motorcyclists and to the motorcyclist who comes from the longer way off, while all participants will receive a souvenir of the event. For these reasons this is a unique chance for all those who have a vintage motorbike, and who can finally carry it out of the garage, make it spick-and-span and ride along Rome’s streets, but also visitors will enjoy the show: many people come from all over Italy (many of them stay in Rome’s hostels) to admire very rare models, besides the historical vehicles of Carabinieri, Polizia di Stato, Polizia Municipale, Vigili del Fuoco and Polizia Penitenziaria, which open the parade by tradition.

The Killers and Franz Ferdinand have recently published their new albums, and this summer they will both go on tour to present their songs and make us dance. Rome: Patti Smith Concert, 6 July 2009

The Seventies, the most fertile decade from the musical point of view, have given birth to bands and artists that have come down in music history and have become real icons for many generations. When we speak about the rock legends of that period, we cannot avoid thinking about Patti Smith, the “priestess of rock”, who has delighted us with her voice, music and words since 1975, when she released her first album Horses.

It is not possible to go back to the Seventies, to that period characterised by a great music ferment, but the concert that Patti Smith will hold in Rome on the 6th of July will give us the chance to enjoy the performance of an artist that has marked those years, and to take advantage of the event to take a journey to Rome.

Patti Smith, who was born in Chicago in 1946, is not only a passionate singer and interpreter, but also a poetess and artist (her works will be displayed at the Robert Miller Gallery) who has worked in New York’s underground theatres, has been a busker and has performed as an actress and as a poetess, then succeeding in combining the expressive power of music with that of words, realising records that are now considered ad landmarks of rock. Patti Smith began to approach the world of music in the early Seventies, when she began to perform with Lenny Kaye, a rock composer: he would play the guitar and she would sing her poems. Few years after piano player Richard Sohl joined them, and together they started performing more regularly, playing also at the CBGB and succeeding in signing a record deal with an emerging label. This happened in 1975, and Horses made people discover Patti Smith’s music and poetry, paving the way for other successful albums and songs, like Because the Night, very famous song which was born of the collaboration with Bruce Springsteen, and which was included in the album Easter (1978). In 1979 Patti retired from the scene, but her voluntary exile lasted only 10 years: in 1988 she released the album Dream of Life, which was written together with her husband Fred Smith. With songs like People have the Power this record marked the artist’s return to the world of music. She did not published any other records until 1996, when she released Gone Again, which was followed by other works and live performances.

Rome, Without Borders Film Festival, 1 – 3 July 2009

One of the biggest contradictions of our time is to be found in the distances between people: geographically speaking the distances between foreign countries are reducing, both means of communication and means of transports give us the illusion of being close to any other part of the world, and that we only need to turn on the TV or to take a plane to go elsewhere. On the other hand this geographical proximity does not correspond to a real feeling of closeness between different peoples, and problems like prejudices, ignorance, intolerance and incomprehension are far from being solved.

The “Without Borders Film Festival”, which takes place in Rome from the 1st to the 3rd of July (book now hotels in Rome), is meant to show what human beings have in common, if they go beyond religious and cultural differences, and telling stories dealing with the encounter of different peoples, it is intended to show that it is possible to go beyond geographical and mental borders.

The festival, which will be held this year for the second time (the first edition achieved a great success, attracting many cinema lovers in Rome), takes inspiration from a documentary realised by Paul Smaczny, “Konwledge is the Beginning”: filming a tour of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which is made of musicians coming from Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine, the documentary shows how inhabitants of countries that fight against each other can travel, work and live together, learning something from each other.

And the films that are selected every year to take part in the festival deal with similar themes, and telling stories they try to find a common humanity between people, which goes beyond any border. About 15 films of all genres (feature, short, animation films and documentaries) are projected during the festival, and projections are accompanied by meetings and discussions with directors, which give tourists in Rome the possibility to look into important issues and to exchange ideas with other people.

Among the themes discussed in this edition of the festival, the role of women in different societies (in the movie “Feminin – Masculin” by Sadaf Foroughi), censorship (“Head Wind” by Mohammad Rasoulof), the negative opinion that too often people have of Islam (“I Bring what I Love” by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi), peace and non-violence as means to achieve important aims (Kashmir: Journey to Freedom” by Udi Aloni), questions about identity (“Off and Running” by Nicole Opper), and much more. Do not miss the short films realised by some Roman students dealing with the theme of “walls”, in the 20th anniversary of the fall of Berlin wall: this works, together with a photo essay realised by some New York’s students which will be presented during the festival, highlights the importance of learning to destroy borders from an early age.

During the festival you will also have the possibility to visit the exhibition “The Course of History”, with the photos took by Belgian photographer Bart Michiels, who visited the most famous European battlefields and took photos of those landscapes as they appear today, to show how the passing of time covers the traces of those fights, while men cannot find a “cure” for war.

Rome: Giotto and the 14th Century, 6 March – 29 June 2009

Giotto, one of the most important innovators in art, is the protagonist of a splendid exhibition in Rome, at Vittoriano Museum.

The exhibition “Giotto and the 14th century”, which will take place in the eternal city from March the 6th to June the 29th, is an unmissable event for all art lovers and scholars, who will not miss the chance to book a hostel in Rome and visit an exhibition that is meant to deal not only with Giotto’s works and the influence that the artist had on his contemporaries and on subsequent art, but also with Italian art between the end of the 12th and the first half of the 14th century. The exhibition can be seen as a sort of reconstruction of Giotto’s travels in Italy, which can make us discover how the artist spread his artistic language in various Italian regions (Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Emilia Romagna, Veneto, Lombardy, Lazio, Campania), and how his works influenced the painting schools of the cities he visited. This is a large and exhaustive exhibition, which features works coming from all over Italy and from all over the world to make the tourists who plan to visit Rome discover the innovative features of Giotto’s style, from three-dimensional representation of space to the return to naturalism and human figure.

The displayed works will include Giotto’s “Madonna with Child on a Throne and Two Angels”, “God the Father Enthroned”, “Christ blessing St John the Evangelist and the Virgin”, Cimabue’s “Virgin and Child”, Puppio Capanna’s “Crucifixion”, Taddeo Gaddi’s “Greggio Crib”, and some recently restored works which will be displayed for the first time after the restoration, like Giotto’s “Badia Polyptich”. Rome: Metallica Concert, 24th June 2009

Summer in Rome will be fired up by Metallica’s music: the world tour of the American band will arrive in Rome on June the 24th.

The concert of Metallica in the eternal city will give thousands of fans the chance to spend a low cost holiday in Rome and to listen to the songs of the latest album of the band, Death Magnetic, released in September 2008. The 9th studio album of the band, the first one to be recorded with current bass player Robert Trujillo, who was hired after the defection of Jason Newsted, has achieved a great success, hitting number one of the charts in 25 countries, including Italy, and has been described by critics as a return to the style of the beginning and to a sound which makes it similar to albums like Master of Puppets and …And Justice for All, respectively released in 1986 and 1988.

The new album has been published 27 years after the formation of the band and 25 years after the first album (Kill ‘Em All, indeed, was published in 1983), but the band seems not to suffer the passing of time: Metallica are always at work, although they have had to face various difficult moments in their career, like the death of bass player Cliff Barton in 1986, alcohol problems (in 2001 James Hetfield temporarily left the band to take part in an alcohol rehabilitation program), the change of some members of the band (besides Jason Newsted, in 1983 guitarist Kirk Hammett replaced Dave Mustaine, then founder of Megadeth, with whom the band had an argument about the authorship of some songs realised while Mustaine was still part of Metallica). In 2001 Metallica also had to deal with a lawsuit against Napster, which had distributed via internet some songs of the band for free, and this contributed in creating the image of a band only interested in money. Nonetheless Metallica are still on the crest of the wave, and each published album has achieved a great success, although many old-guard fans did not really appreciate albums like Load and Re-Load, respectively published in 1996 and in 1997, which marked a change in the style of the band, visible also in their renewed look, cleared of long hair and leather clothes. Despite criticism, Metallica have always gone on, marking three decades with songs that everyone remembers (from The Four Horsemen to Fuel, from Nothing Else Matters to Until it Sleeps, from One to St Anger, just to give few examples), and receiving important awards also 25 years after their formation (in 2009 the band was awarded with a grammy for “Best Metal Performance”).

Rome: God Save the Punk, from the 12th to the 24th of May 2009

Is it possible to bring punk to theatre? Is it possible to represent one of the most deflagrating music phenomena ever with the limits of a play, without losing its explosive power? The show “God Save the Punk”, in Rome from May the 12th to the 24th, is an evidence of the fact that it is possible to tell the story of punk on a theatre stage mixing words and music, images and drama.

Carmen Giardina, an Italian actress and director, had the idea of realising a play inspired to punk music and culture after having read Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil e Gillian McCain, a book that deals with punk and gives voice to those who have really experienced this world, gathering interviews and statements issued by those people who can be somehow considered as the protagonists of punk: musicians, artists, but also groupies, record industrialists and journalists. The tales gathered in Please Kill Me are very lively, and they have inspired an even more involving play, which adds music and images to narration, in order to make this phenomenon live again, a phenomenon that was born at the end of the 60s, reached its climax in the 70s and keeps having followers all over the world and influencing contemporary music, fashion and culture.

The first summer cultural event in Rome is “Letterature”, an international literature festival that has hosted some of the best Italian and international writers since 2002.

The festival is meant to look into the different aspects of the dichotomy earth-moon, giving space to all literary genres, from fantasy novels to poetry: literature lovers cannot miss the chance to enjoy a trip to Rome and meet some of the most appreciated Italian and international authors. The festival will kick off with an extraordinary couple: America Andrew Sean Greer, whose novel The Story of a Marriage has been very appreciated both by readers and by critics, and Margaret Mazzantini, one of the most appreciated and awarded contemporary Italian writers (Don’t Move and Venuto al Mondo are only two of her best-known novels). The festival will include also many other interesting events: “Lunar Park, scritture stralunate” will host Edoardo Albinati and Vinicio Capossela, while Swede John Ajvide Lindqvist and Italian fantasy novelist Licia Troisi will participate in the event named “L’ombra della luna, scritture dell’immaginario”. “Il verso della luna” is the name of the evening dedicated to poetry, while “La luna nel pozzo” will host Roberto Piumini, a fairy tales writer, and Andrea Vitali. Space will be given also to legal thriller, with John Grisham, the author that has sold the most during the 90s, and to crime fiction, with Swede Bjorn Larsson and American Matthew Pearl. Petros Markaris, Antonio Muñoz Molina and Ermanno Cavazioni too will take part in the event, while the physicist Carlo Rovelli and the geologist Mario Tozzi will close the festival dealing with the theme “Earth Moon” from a scientific point of view.

“Letterature” is a festival where authors read out passages of their own works, and where words and other expression means mix together: different kinds of music played by djs and bands (like Giardini di Mirò, Luna Riverse, Port Royal) will accompany the readings, and every meeting will be introduced by a trailer made up of images and music. However, the focus will always be on the main feature of the festival, i.e. on words, in particular words in tales and poetry, to highlight their importance not only as expression means, but also as matter to be moulded into art. Rome: Brazil through its Artists from the 21st of April to the 23rd of May 2009

Brazil is a wonderful and fascinating country, pervaded as it is by amazing colours and landscapes and captivating music and rhythm. A melting-pot of cultures characterised by deep-rooted traditions, Brazil is one of the most longed-for travel destinations for travellers from all over the world, and it is universally appreciated and well-known for Rio Carnival, for its beaches, for the Amazon Forest, but also for the art and culture which emanate from this country.

To make people discover the best of Brazilian art, but also to present Brazil from the point of view of those artists who were born or have lived in Brazil, and who have taken inspiration from their homeland, from the 21st of April to the 23rd of May Rome will host the exhibition “Brazil through its Artists”.

The visitors of the exhibition, which will be held in the Brazilian Embassy, will take advantage of their holiday in Rome to take a journey to a more distant land, to discover landscapes which are sometimes made even more magic by the brush of some of the most appreciated Brazilian artists in the world: Roberto Burle Marx, who is considered as one of the best contemporary landscapists, and who is well-known also for having projected the UNESCO gardens in Paris; Carybé, a painter, engraver and sculptor who realised some murals for New York’s John F. Kennedy airport; João Henrique, who with his extraordinary technique in using colours has succeeded in displaying his works all over the world; Antônio Maia, whose works, which are characterised by strong colours and precise symbols, reveal the country’s folkloristic traditions; Lia Mittarakis, who is well-known for her bright works representing folkloristic scenes; Cândido Portinari, who is considered as the most important painter in Brazil, and who has also realised the murals “War” and “Peace” for the United Nations building; Marylu Prado, an abstract artist who has been dedicated various personal exhibitions also in some European cities ; Francisco Da Silva, who was awarded a prize at the Venice Biennale in 1966; Rubem Valentim, an abstract-geometrical artist who often used the signs of Afro-American rituals.

Nine artists who will convince contemporary art lovers to book an apartment in Rome and go to the eternal city to visit a unique exhibition, which mixes styles and subjects which are very different from each other, and for this reason they can perfectly describe the diversity of Brazilian landscape, characterised as it is by lush vegetation but also by conurbations, and the traditions and rituals rooted in the culture of the country. An unmissable chance to learn something more not only about Brazilian art, but also about some of Brazil’s main features: since the 16th century Brazil has been a multiethnic and multicultural country, characterised by the mix of religions and cultures of African, European and indigenous people, and able to absorb all the different influences coming from various parts of the world to create a new, typically Brazilian, culture and identity. And this Brazilian capacity of fusion is particularly evident in this exhibition, which shows how Brazilian art has assimilated and reworked some of the most important European artistic currents, like impressionism, fauvism, cubism and surrealism, but also abstractionism, expressionism and concretism.

Rome: World Press Photo from the 8th to the 28th of May 2009

If you have a passion for photography do not miss the World Press Photo exhibition, which will be held in Rome in May, from the 8th to the 28th of May 2009.

World Press Photo is a non-profit organization created in Amsterdam in 1955, and it is meant to promote high-level photojournalism and contribute to the free exchange of information. The famous, homonymous photo contest is one of the main activities organised by the association, and for over 50 years it has awarded prizes to the best photos realised by press photographers from all over the world. Nowadays it is considered as the largest and most prestigious press photography contest in the world, an evidence of this being given by the numbers of the contest, which in this edition has reached record levels: 5,508 professional photographers coming from 124 different countries have presented their works (96,000 images). Moreover a great number of Asian photographers (Chinese and Indians in particular) have taken part in this year’s edition, 14% more than the previous edition. All photos have been divided into 10 categories (Spot News, General News, People in the News, Sports Action, Sports Features, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Portraits, Arts and Entertainment, Nature) and have undergone the evaluation of an international jury, which has awarded prizes to 62 photographers coming from 27 different counties, confirming that images, more than any other means of communication, can go beyond geographical, cultural and language boundaries.

The photos that are awarded a prize are always published in a book and displayed all over the world: also this year the World Press Photo exhibition, after being held in Amsterdam, will be set up in many other cities, like Rome: book now a hotel in Rome and find the time to watch some of the best and most representative photos of 2008, images that have been describing the most meaningful events of the year. The visitors who are planning a trip to Rome will have the possibility to admire the image that has been awarded the first prize: the picture, which was took by American Anthony Suau, is a black and white image featuring an officer in an apartment in Cleveland, Ohio. The man holds a gun and walks in a chaotic room, as if it was a war image. In fact the officer is simply checking that the people who have been turned out of their home have left the apartment, but the fact that the image reminds us of war is very meaningful, and the photo has been awarded because it is a sort of symbol of the world crisis, which brings war into the houses of those who cannot pay their debts. Also in this edition, then, the jury has awarded the main prize to a photographer who uses his ability to portray important contemporary issues.

Spend some days in the eternal city (you can stay in a campsite in Rome), and watch the photos taken by Italian photographers. Many Italian photographers have been awarded this year: Giulio Di Sturco, Davide Monteleone, Paolo Verzone, Massimo Siragusa, Mattia Insolera, Carlo Gianferro.

Rome: Depeche Mode Concert, 16th June 2009

Not many bands succeed in going through decades and music trends always achieving success and being appreciated both by critics and by different generations of music lovers, as if the passing of time, exactly as happens for wine, could only bring advantages to them. Depeche Mode certainly belong to this category.

Depeche Mode, born in 1980, have been one of the most important bands of that decade, and they have been able to renew themselves without rejecting their past, realising successful records also in the 90s and succeeding in carrying their music into the new millennium. With the publication of the new album Sounds of the Universe, this year in April, the band is celebrating an almost 30 years long career (the first album, Speak & Spell, was published in 1981), 30 years marked by ups and downs, by great success, by songs and concerts that went down in history but also by crisis, abandonment and recommencements, 30 years that have turned the band into a landmark in world’s music panorama.

To listen to the songs of the new album, which has hit charts at number one in 20 countries in the first week after its publication, while in other 10 countries (even in the United States, a traditionally difficult market for British bands, but not for Depeche Mode) it has moved up to the first 3 positions, the fans of the band will take part in one of the concerts of the long promotional tour of the new album: the “Tour of the Universe” will kick off in Tel Aviv on May 10th (the band was supposed to play in Israel during their previous tour in 2006, but the event was cancelled due to war), and will then go on all over the world. Rome: Art and Advertising. Italian Advertisement and Avant-Gardes 1920-1940, from the 26th of February to the 24th of May 2009

From the 26th of February to the 24th of May the exhibition “Art and Advertising. Italian Advertisement and Avant-Gardes 1920-1940” will be held in Rome. The exhibitory spaces of Casino dei Principi, in Musei di Villa Torlonia, will host about 100 posters realised between the 20s and the 40s, which show the connection between art and advertising and between advertising and industrial and economic development.

The first forms of advertisements date back centuries: on the walls of some houses in Pompei, which was destroyed by the volcano eruption, some writings have been found, which announced events, shows and competitions or persuaded people to vote for a given candidate. However, before the print invention, advertising was made through oral channels, like barkers and criers. With the print invention, in the 15th century, the first advertisements were published in newspapers, but it was during the Industrial Revolution, thus with the increase in production, products variety and competition between entrepreneurs, that the need of promoting products and informing customers arose, contributing to the birth of a type of advertising which was very similar to nowadays advertisements. In Italy, which was industrially and economically underdeveloped if compared to other countries, the first advertisements began to be widespread between the middle of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, both in newspapers and through posters, which soon became the main means of mass communication, and in the first half of the 20th century they were considered not only as an instrument to promote products, but also as a means of artistic expression.

Between the 20s and the 40s Italy underwent a particular period, characterised by political and social changes and industrial development. These years were marked by mass culture and production, fascism and propaganda, conquests and enthusiasm for modernity. In this period advertisements, which spread rapidly, became also a field of research and experimentation for artists: in this period some of the most important 20th century’s artists, like Adolfo Wild, Duilio Cambellotti, Mario Sironi, Lucio Fontana and the futurists Balla, Depero and Prampolini, realised advertisements.

The exhibition “Art and Advertising. Italian Advertisement and Avant-Gardes 1920-1940” is meant to show the evolution of art in advertising displaying books, posters and sketches realised in the first half of the 20th century: book now a 2 star hotel in Rome and visit the 6 sections of the exhibition, to discover how art and advertisement have changed through time, from the graphic refinement of the beginning of the century to the colouring of Futurism, to expressionism and rationalism.
